Packing for a dream vacation is equal parts exciting and daunting. I slowly start packing a week ahead to make sure I don't forget anything. The trick is to ensure you have everything you need without overpacking. If this is your first cruise OR your 10th, listen up. Here are some must-haves to ensure smoother sailing ahead:
1. Portable Charger:
First thing's first, a portable charger is pure gold. We all know how "in the moment" precious memories happen, so don't let a low battery to dampen your fun. Whether you're lounging by the pool or exploring new terrain on an excursion, this charger is a work horse, and I DO NOT leave home without it. I feel like I was eeking by with previous chargers, so this is absolutely my #1 recommendation.
2. Apple Air Tags:
Keep track of your precious belongings with Apple Air Tags. Whether it's your suitcase or carry-on, these tags help you locate your items at all times, ensuring you and the airlines don't lose things while in transit.
3. Reusable Water Bottle and Tervis Coffee Cap:
Stay hydrated with a reusable water bottle, especially crucial on a cruise ship. Remember to start your journey at the airport with an EMPTY water bottle to get through security. Most domestic airports have water stations outside of security checkpoints, so it's a free and easy refill on the other side before boarding begins. A hydrated flight sets you up for success the rest of the journey.
Similarly, the small coffee cups on cruise ships (that needs constant refilling by wait staff) wear me out, so I opt for my own portable coffee cup that keeps my coffee warm AND keeps the java rolling!
4. Jewelry Organizer:
Unless you get some sick satisfaction out of untangling necklaces (no judgement), jewelry organization is a lifesaver. So much easier to keep your earrings, necklaces, and other accessories organized and easily accessible.
A sewing kit is a great addition for small adjustments to clothing while on the road.
5. Surge Protector and USB Outlet Extender:
Cabins on modern ships have more robust outlet options, but how many people are you traveling with? A party of two will have less hiccups than a part of 3-4. Most families have multiple phones, tablets, game devices and laptops. This extender ensures ample charging opportunities for all.
6. Lanyard with Key Holder:
Keep your credit card sized cruise ship key card safe and accessible at all times with a lanyard. And whether it is Harry Potter, Marvel or a sports team, you can personalize it to be practical and stylish.
7. Luggage Tag Holder:
Print your luggage tags (from the cruise line website or app) and have them ready for the bellman at the cruise port inside a plastic luggage tag holder. Blah blah blah. Did you just think meh? You're in good company. I have heard that a million times and never did it either. In truth, I didn't see the necessity until we arrived at a very chaotic cruise terminal in the POURING rain. We didn't have the plastic casing, so all we could do is hope our paper tags performed for us during the watery onslaught. This simple accessory would have been priceless for us that day, so I will never be without them again. Here is a convenient luggage tag and lanyard set.
8. Magnetic Hooks and Towel Clips:
Space is finite on a cruise ship, so utilize the magnetic cabin walls with magnetic hooks for storage and convenience. Hang hats, robes, or decorations without cluttering your space. I collect magnets on my journeys, and I love to showcase them on our walls after port days.
Another one of my favorite cruise (and all-inclusive resort) purchases has been lounge chair towel clips to easily identify your spot after a dip in the hot tub or pool.
9. Motion Sickness Medication and OTC Travel Essentials:
Be prepared for...well, whatever? Bring a small stash of motion sickness medication, Advil, allergy medication and anything else that makes sense to you. Your access to OTC meds will be limited on foreign soil, plus it will likely be cha-ching in tourist areas. Pack a few tablets here and there in a small first aid kit...your future self might be thanking you.
Additionally, leave the full-sized items at home and opt for travel-sized essentials like bug spray, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, bug spray, and deodorant for a comfortable and healthy trip. Did I mention bug spray? ;)
10. E-Reader or Tablet:
Physical books take up precious space in your bag, so download multiple books (prior to embark) on your Kindle or tablet. That way, even without the wifi package, you have instant entertainment.
And speaking of electronics, a sound machine is the best way to drown out any exterior noise on the road OR at home. This is our go-to for both!
Conclusion:
With these packing tips, you'll stay connected, organized and healthy. Get ready to rock your travel experience with these essentials.
