Navigating Bliss: Why River Cruising Should Be Your Next Vacation
As traditional ocean liners became larger, river cruising remains a captivating alternative, offering a more curated way to explore stunning destinations along picturesque waterways. After my first such experience along the Rhone in France last month onboard the beautiful Scenic Sapphire, I wonder why I waited so long. This is not your typical ocean cruise...expect an experience that is more dense with culture, cuisine and comfort.
In this blog post, we'll delve into the myriad advantages to a river cruise:
Intimate Atmosphere: Although my entry point and exit point to France was a bustling Pre-Olympics Paris, the duration of my river cruise was in the hospitable and serene countryside between Lyon and Arles. Absolutely gorgeous! Best of all, although capacity onboard the Scenic Sapphire is 170, I enjoyed an experience of less than 90 people, so it was almost like having a ship to myself! Less people allowed for more personalized interactions with fellow travelers and crew members, creating a sense of camaraderie. When was the last time you talked to every passenger onboard a ship? I can honestly say I did that a month ago.
Better Views: If you have been on a cruise ship, let's be honest...the view isn't always awesome. Sometimes, you're just staring at nothing in the middle of the ocean. River cruises offer more immersion into an area. Enjoy unique opportunities to sail past stunning bridges, vineyards, medieval villages, cathedrals, chateaus, historic landmarks, locks, and picturesque landscapes from the comfort of your balcony.
Cultural Immersion: Porting closer to a city means diving deeper into the soul of destination. An easy walk from the boat allows you to meander through the very heart of bustling cities and quaint towns to soak in the local shopping, museums, food and history. The cities of the Rhone were previously occupied by Rome, so we visited multiple arenas....think "The Colosseum" but smaller. I was also able to have a glass of wine at the Arles cafe that inspired "Cafe Terrace at Night" by Vincent Van Gogh. It was just a 5 minute walk from the ship!
Better Amenities: Have you ever felt like the large ships offer "too much" variety of food and entertainment experiences. I mean seriously. Some days you wish you can clone yourself to attend 5 interesting options that are all offered at the same time. Their smaller cousins, river cruise ships, offer fewer but more curated amenities. How about a small group watercolor painting class on the aft of the ship? I literally had one on one input from the local artist to create a frame worthy painting for our home. How about a small group daily cooking class with the chef to make French Onion Soup or a Crepes Suzette? Or maybe free e-bikes to explore the area independently if you shy away from excursions? From larger cabins to more elevated dining experiences and onboard entertainment, I appreciated not having to pour through a daily program over breakfast.
Smooth Sailing: If you have sea sickness concerns, know that river cruising is through calm waters, providing a more motionless experience.
All Inclusive For Realz: When you first see the proposal from your travel agent for a river cruise, you might be a little surprised, but please keep in mind that most river cruises are TRULY all inclusive. Unlike ocean cruises that leave you feeling "nickel and dimed" for alcohol, excursions and even those all-important drinking water packages, river cruises bundle everything into the pricing. Don't forget that includes multiple options for unique shore excursions!
Environmental Friendliness: Rest easier knowing that you are setting sail on eco-friendly cruises that blend unforgettable adventures with care for the planet. River cruises minimize environmental impact through lower fuel use and carbon emissions, embodying sustainable tourism for the mindful traveler.
Historical and Cultural Enrichment: River cruises incorporate onboard lectures, workshops, and cultural performances that provide valuable insights into the history, art, and traditions of the regions visited. While in Avingnon, Scenic provided us with an unforgettable chamber music performance at the unbelievably beautiful Pope's Palace. We also visited a premiere winery for a truly incredible vino adventure.
